My name is Erica. I'm a 30 year old Canadian living in Melbourne, Australia with my husband and my new puppy. As a high schooler, I went to a small all girls school from years 7-12, and during that time I never really learned the sort of self-repression that girls sometimes can when they go to school with boys. I always knew that I could do whatever I wanted for a career, and gender roles never really played a part in those decisions (thanks very much in part to my parents, who both worked full time jobs, shared the parenting responsibilities, and provided lots of inspiration, help, and advice throughout my life).
I went to university in Vancouver to study Mechanical Engineering, and upon graduation, decided to go back and obtain a Master of Management degree so that I could accelerate my rise to the top of the corporate ladder (still a work in progress). I graduated from my MM in 2011, and moved to Melbourne in mid-2012 to follow my then-boyfriend, Luke, back home.
In July 2016 Luke and I got married, and brought home our fur baby Murphy, a Labrador Retriever, 3 weeks later.
I used to have a blog. I started it to write about the things that I love, but quickly got caught up in the metrics and instead of maintaining my own voice, tended to write posts similar to other fashion/beauty blogs I read. Eventually, I got too wrapped up and stopped enjoying it, so I quit and took the blog offline.
The reason I like reading fashion and beauty blogs is because I love reading what other girls are into, what they're discovering, and reading about their passions. But every blog I enjoyed reading focused on fashion, beauty, DIY and home décor.
I like those things (however probably will leave those topics to the other bloggers, as they're much more qualified to write about them than I am!), but I also am a driven career girl, determined to succeed and provide a beautiful and fulfilling life for my family. I love reading about finance and how I can best set myself up for financial freedom, both in the near and far distant future. I am motivated by money, which some people frown on, but it drives me even further to want to succeed. I also want to share what I've learned through my work life so far, whether it's writing a killer job application (which I am actually pretty good at), learning how to work with a difficult manager, or working to build my professional network in a natural and unforced way ('networking' and 'unforced' seem like polar opposites but they don't have to be!). I love to read, and I love to learn new things, and I miss being part of a book club, so I want to share my thoughts about the many books I read as well.
Lastly, while 3 years ago I thought my life's aspirations were to climb to the top of a large company, becoming CEO and sitting in the c-suite, I'm not sure of that anymore. I don't know where I'll end up, but I feel like, if I have a place to document my thoughts and the process of my professional and personal growth, maybe through writing it all down I'll figure out what it is that really drives me. But if not, hopefully I'll just have something cool to look back on one day to see exactly how far I've come.
